HISTORY of Ruston Junior
HS
In 1983
a large $14½ million bond election passed which provided for a new
junior high school. The site was a 30 acre tract to be purchased from
Mr. J.S. Tarbutton. The site was in northwest Ruston in the northeast
corner of the juncture of Parish Road #106 and I-20 North Service Road.
With the growing
population of Ruston, a fourth elementary school was needed, so Glenview
Junior High was changed to Glenview Elementary.
The new
junior high was to be the first new school built in Ruston since 1963.
This created the need for a brand new 7th and 8th grade school, as a
result, Ruston Junior High School was born!
The
architect was Herbert Land from Monroe.
Ruston Junior High School opened its doors in
August of 1986 with the first principal being Siscro McCarty.
Students are
actively involved in a variety of extracurricular opportunities:
athletics (football, cross-country, basketball, soccer, track and field,
golf, and softball; spirit (cheerleading and danceline); music (band and
choir), and clubs (talented art, FCA, yearbook, student council, and 4-H).
In
2006, construction began on new additions to the school which
included a girls gym/multipurpose
room, wing of eight classrooms, concession stand, softball and football
fields.
Also,
a
teachers’ parking lot was added in front of the school.
We are very proud of our
school and we encourage you to stop by and visit anytime!
2008-2009
At this time, Ruston Junior HS has a faculty that consists of 58.
This includes teachers, special education teachers, computer instructor, GT
teachers, librarian, band director, choir teacher, art teachers, counselors, office staff, coordinators, and administrators. We have
an enrollment of 565 students with one self-contained special education
class.
The state of Louisiana places a great deal of
importance on test results and schools receive a school performance
score based on test scores, attendance, etc. For the 2007-2008
school year, Ruston Junior HS received a school performance score of
88.3.
This is a growth of 0.5
from the previous year. The growth
label for the year is Minimal Academic
Growth.
